Where to Put Small Studio Monitors on a Desk

A desk is a hostile place to put a loudspeaker.

It is a large, hard, reflective plane, and it sits directly under the drivers. Behind it there is usually a wall, often close. To the sides there are monitors, shelves, and corners. None of this is in the room the speaker was voiced in, and all of it changes what you hear.

Most nearfield advice stops at “make an equilateral triangle and aim the tweeters at your ears.” That is the easy half. The harder half is what the desk and the wall do to the bottom two octaves once the triangle is right — and that part is not a matter of taste. It is measurable, repeatable, and largely predictable.

What the desk actually does

Sound leaving a speaker does not only travel to your ears. It also travels to the desk surface and bounces up, arriving a fraction of a millisecond later. That reflected copy combines with the direct sound. Where the two are in phase, they add. Where they are out of phase, they cancel.

The result is a comb-filter pattern: a series of peaks and dips through the low mids and upper bass. On a typical desk the deepest cancellation lands somewhere between 100 Hz and 250 Hz — which is exactly where the body of a kick drum, the fundamental of a male vocal, and the low end of a guitar live.

You cannot EQ your way out of this cleanly. A cancellation caused by a reflection is not a flat loss you can add back; boosting it mostly adds energy to the reflection too.

A wall behind the speaker does something similar but lower down. The closer the wall, the more it lifts the bass — which sounds impressive for a day and then costs you every mix decision you make below 150 Hz.

Boundaries are not a problem to be hidden

The honest way to deal with a boundary is to change the speaker’s response to account for it, before the room gets involved — not to bury it under EQ afterwards.

This is what SOVOX’s Active DSP Precision Tuning is for. Each MiniMax3 Monitor carries its own DSP: an electronic crossover at 240 Hz and 3.6 kHz with third-order slopes, phase correction across the crossover regions, and time alignment between drivers. Because the crossover is electronic rather than passive, each driver is controlled independently, and the acoustic centres can be aligned in time rather than approximated by component values.

That same processing carries four placement presets on the rear panel, under SOUND MODE:

The fourth is the one people get wrong. Desk & Wall is not a corner setting — it compensates for two separate boundaries acting together, the surface underneath and the wall behind. That is the most common real desk, and it is the setting most people should be on.

Two further controls sit alongside them, and they do different jobs from the placement presets:

  • TREBLE TILT at +2 / 0 / −2 dB — for rooms that are unusually live or unusually dead
  • BASS ROLL-OFF at −4 / −2 / 0 dB, plus a Dyn position — for trimming low end that a boundary preset has not fully accounted for

Set the placement preset first. It addresses the cause. Use the tilt and roll-off afterwards, sparingly, for what is left.

A working order of operations

  1. Get the geometry right. Equal distances from you to each speaker, tweeters near ear height, speakers and listening position forming a roughly equilateral triangle.
  2. Pull them off the wall if you can. Even 10–20 cm of clearance changes the low end noticeably.
  3. Set SOUND MODE to match reality. On a desk against a wall, that is Desk & Wall — not Free, however tempting the extra weight sounds.
  4. Break up the first desk reflection. The bounce point is roughly midway between the speaker and you. Angling the speakers up slightly, raising them on stands, or simply not having a bare glossy surface at that point all help.
  5. Only now touch tilt and roll-off. If you find yourself wanting more than one step of either, the geometry is probably still wrong.
  6. Check on material you know cold. Not on the material you are currently mixing.

Why the mode settings can be trusted

A placement preset is only useful if it does what it claims. Ours are measured, not estimated.

Every MiniMax3 Monitor is characterised on a Klippel Near-Field Scanner, and the results are published as CTA-2034 spinorama data — the industry-standard full-sphere measurement set. That includes on-axis response, off-axis behaviour at 15°/30°/45°/60°, early reflections, horizontal and vertical directivity, and distortion at realistic listening levels.

The measurements matter more than usual for a speaker this size. MiniMax3 Monitor is 110 mm wide and runs a genuine three-way, four-driver architecture: a 1″ silk dome tweeter and 3″ carbon-fibre midrange mounted coaxially on the patented ISP™ architecture, a dedicated 3.5″ carbon-fibre woofer, and a 5″ equivalent passive radiator. Response is 49 Hz – 20 kHz (−3 dB), 46 Hz – 20 kHz (−6 dB). Maximum SPL at one metre is 97 dB short-term across 100 Hz – 6 kHz, and 95 dB long-term to IEC 60268-5.

The coaxial part is what makes placement forgiving in the first place. With the tweeter at the acoustic centre of the midrange, both radiate from one point, so there is no inter-driver time offset to lobe around the crossover. The tonal balance you hear sitting down is the balance you hear standing up — which is a rare thing to be able to say about a monitor on a desk.

The short version

The desk and the wall are going to alter your low end. You can pretend otherwise and fight it with EQ afterwards, or you can tell the speaker which boundaries it is working next to and let it compensate before your room ever gets involved.

Set the geometry. Pick the mode that matches your actual desk. Then leave it alone and listen to something you know.
