Why three-way is hard at this size

A two-way monitor asks one driver to cover everything from the bass through the upper midrange, then hands off to a tweeter somewhere around 2–3 kHz. That handoff lands in the region where the ear is most sensitive to timing and directivity errors.

A three-way design moves the crossover points away from that region: a dedicated woofer handles the bass, a dedicated midrange covers the vocal band without also moving air for the low end, and the tweeter takes over higher up. The cost is physical. Three drivers, three amplifier channels and three filter sections have to fit somewhere.

A coaxial arrangement recovers some of that space by mounting the tweeter on the same axis as the midrange, so the two behave closer to a single point source, and the vertical listening window stays consistent when a listener moves. What the numbers actually mean

Width is the largest single difference

At 110 mm, the MiniMax3 Monitor is 96 mm narrower than the Kali IN-5 and 79 mm narrower than the Genelec 8331A. Across all six speakers here, the next narrowest is the Neumann KH 80 DSP at 154 mm.

On a desk this compounds. Two speakers at 206 mm each consume 412 mm of horizontal space before any gap to a display, keyboard or wall. Two at 110 mm consume 220 mm. For anyone working on a 120 cm desk with a monitor arm in the middle, that difference decides whether the speakers sit at the correct listening angle or get pushed outward and downward until they no longer do.

Weight follows the same pattern and matters for the same reason. At 4.1 kg the MiniMax3 Monitor weighs less than half the IN-5's 8.43 kg, which widens the range of desk clamps, arms and small stands that can carry it safely.

Cabinet material splits the group

The MiniMax3 Monitor and the Genelec 8331A use aluminium enclosures. The Kali IN-5 uses vinyl-wrapped MDF, the JBL 305P MkII 15 mm MDF with an ABS baffle, and the Neumann KH 80 DSP a polycarbonate composite. Aluminium is stiffer and denser than MDF for a given wall thickness, which is one route to keeping cabinet resonance out of the passband in a small enclosure — though it is not the only route, and enclosure design matters more than material alone.

Placement compensation: more positions is not automatically better

This is the one row where the MiniMax3 Monitor offers fewer options than a direct competitor. The Kali IN-5 provides seven boundary compensation positions via DIP switches, covering stands and desks at three wall distances each plus a console bridge. The MiniMax3 Monitor provides four modes on its rear-panel SOUND MODE table: Free, Desk, Wall, and D&W — the last compensating for desk and wall boundaries simultaneously.

The Genelec 8331A takes a different approach entirely, measuring the room with a microphone and calculating the correction in GLM software. That is the most thorough method of the three, and also the one that requires the most setup.

Which approach suits a given room depends on how far it deviates from the presets. A desk against a wall is a common enough case that a preset handles it well; an unusual room may need measurement.

Bass extension needs its qualifier to mean anything

The MiniMax3 Monitor reaches 49 Hz at −3 dB and 46 Hz at −6 dB. The Genelec 8331A publishes 58 Hz at ±1.5 dB and 45 Hz at −6 dB. Those two speakers are closer than the first pair of numbers suggests and further apart than the second pair suggests, because the tolerances differ.

This is worth stating plainly because bass figures are the specification most often quoted without their qualifier. A speaker described simply as "46 Hz" could be −3 dB, −6 dB or −10 dB at that frequency, and the audible difference between those three cases is substantial. When comparing any two monitors, the qualifier is not a footnote; it is half the number.

Independent measurement is the category norm

That is worth stating for what it is. Independent measurement is not a distinguishing feature in this class; it is the price of entry, and every manufacturer here has paid it. What it means for a buyer is that none of these speakers has to be taken on trust. Choosing between them

If desk width is the binding constraint. The MiniMax3 Monitor at 110 mm is the narrowest three-way here by a wide margin, and the narrowest of all six. This is the case it was designed for.

If maximum output matters more than footprint. The MiniMax3 Monitor is the quietest speaker in this comparison. Its 95 dB long-term figure under IEC 60268-5 is a conservative, standards-defined number rather than a peak, but a larger cabinet will still play louder. For a large room, a long listening distance, or tracking drums at volume, the IN-5 or a larger monitor is the better tool.

If the room is difficult and the budget allows. The Genelec 8331A's GLM measurement-based calibration addresses room problems that no set of presets can. It is also roughly seven times the price of the MiniMax3 Monitor.

If three-way is not a requirement. The JBL 305P MkII and Adam T5V deliver competent two-way performance at a fraction of the cost, and the Neumann KH 80 DSP is a well-measuring two-way in a notably small cabinet. A well-executed two-way will outperform a compromised three-way. The argument for three-way is about where the crossovers sit, not about the number itself.

If the desk is against a wall. All six offer some boundary compensation. The IN-5 offers the most positions, the 8331A the most precise method, and the MiniMax3 Monitor a Desk & Wall mode that addresses both boundaries at once.

Is a three-way monitor always better than a two-way?
